What changes when search becomes a conversation?

A search such as “marketing consultant” gives very little context. A question such as “How can a small ecommerce brand improve repeat purchases without increasing its advertising budget?” reveals a problem, a constraint and an outcome. That is a much stronger starting point for an article.

Google’s guidance says its AI search features can explore several related queries while constructing a response. It also says established SEO practices remain relevant, with no special optimisation required for inclusion. Google Search Central explains the requirements.

My view is that businesses should organise their content around the decisions customers are trying to make. A page that clearly explains trade-offs is more useful than one that repeats a broad service keyword.

SEO, GEO and answer engine optimisation

Generative engine optimisation, often shortened to GEO, is a label used for improving visibility in generated answers. Answer engine optimisation describes a similar ambition. These terms can help frame a discussion, but they should not distract a business from a sound website and useful information.

Start by assigning one clear question to each page. A guide to CRM automation should explain what happens after an enquiry arrives. A guide to ecommerce retention should explain the customer journey after purchase. Both can connect to an automation service, while serving different reader needs.

Use descriptive titles, a concise opening answer and headings that reflect the real questions beneath the topic. Explain unfamiliar terminology when it first appears. Readers should be able to understand the argument without already working in marketing.

Make expertise visible through detail

Specificity is more persuasive than a claim of expertise. Show how a decision would be made, what information is needed and what could change the recommendation. If an article recommends a lead-scoring workflow, explain how it handles missing information and where a person reviews the result.

For example, a useful article about marketing automation for a small service business could compare three starting points: enquiry routing, proposal reminders and campaign reporting. It could explain which workflow suits a team with low enquiry volume and which suits a team receiving hundreds of requests.

Include verified evidence where available. Clearly distinguish an illustrative calculation from a client result. Give readers enough context to understand the limits of an example, including costs, time periods and assumptions.

Connect the article to the rest of the website

An article should help a reader take the next sensible step. Link to a related guide when it answers a follow-up question. Link to a service page when the reader may need help implementing the idea. Avoid placing the same sales link after every paragraph.

For a business website, I would also check that important information is available as readable text, pages work comfortably on mobile and navigation makes deeper content easy to reach. Keep the author name and publication date visible. Review articles when the underlying product or advice changes.

Google explicitly notes that special AI text files and special schema are not needed for its AI search features. Basic crawlability and accurate page information deserve attention before speculative additions.

Measure discovery and business value together

Track relevant search impressions, visits to the article, movement to service pages and qualified enquiries. A page attracting fewer visitors can still be commercially useful when those visitors closely match the business’s audience.

Ask new prospects which question brought them to the site. Their language can reveal the next article to write. Treat isolated appearances in AI answers as observations rather than a stable ranking: the query, context and generated response may change.

A practical first month is simple: identify ten customer questions, publish one genuinely useful answer, connect it to a relevant service and review the enquiries it supports. Search visibility is an ongoing editorial and technical discipline. No article, keyword list or markup can guarantee inclusion.
